Project End Alopecia (Gluten-Free): Day 12 + Recipe

Welcome to Day 12 of our Project End Alopeci journey. Over the last few days I’ve been a little busier with my brand new Instagram account – check it out here. My goal is to get more insights on areas that I discuss about on this blog, and to reach more people with helpful info, inspo and lessons learned.

So 12 days into our journey to figure out this alopecia thing, and everything is going well.

Breakfast

With the usual morning rush, we like to keep breakfast on school days simple, therefore we hardly navigate outside of our usual varieties. But I happen to have plantains on hand, and decide to give Little Claire her first taste of plantains!

She is a huge fan of bananas, so I figured that she might like plantains too.

They are so easy to make: simply slice up a ripe plantain (it looks yellow/black when ripe), toss up the slices with a drizzle of virgin, unrefined coconut oil and a sprinkle of sea salt (optional), then cook on a pre-heated skillet. Add a couple of drizzles of coconut oil if the pan gets too dry, so the plantains do not burn.

SOYGREEN

Since starting to include SOYGREEN as her daily protein and vegetables beverage supplement, I would give her half a packet prepared with cool water as a beverage first thing in the morning. Empty stomach is best to absorb all the goodness from the soybeans and vegetables. It also gives me some time to prepare breakfast in peace as she wouldn’t be screaming in hunger!

Before leaving the house, she also had half a cup of organic cow milk, a teaspoon of Nordic Naturals Baby DHA (she wouldn’t leave the house without it), and two Nordic Naturals Children’s DHA gummies.

Lunch and Dinner

Little Claire is also a big fan of rice pilaf, especially mushrooms rice pilaf. We can almost never go wrong with it. I also love making it because it’s really easy and makes a quick yet balanced menu when served with greens on the side.

The rice was fluffy and tasty yet not over powering. It contains protein, polysaccharides from the mushrooms, and the side of salad/stir-fry greens completes the meal. The best part is Little Claire chomped down her bowl of rice in no time, all by herself. No nagging required!

Here’s my recipe.

Mushroom and Turkey Rice Pilaf

Servings: 4-6

Gluten free mushroom rice pilaf on Natural Alopecia Wellness

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice, uncooked
  • 1.5 cup homemade chicken broth (made by boiling free range chicken bones and vegetables in water)
  • 1-2 tbsp pure sesame oil (I use black sesame oil)
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 150-200gr lean ground turkey (free-range, antibiotic-free preferred)
  • Handful of shitake mushrooms sliced (dried or fresh will do - dried mushrooms need to be pre-soaked)
  • Sea salt
  • Ground pepper
  • Brown or raw sugar (I use demerara sugar)
  • Soy sauce, or tamari/soy seasoning for gluten-free option

Instructions

  • 1. Wash and drain rice, set aside.
  • 2. Heat wok and sesame oil.
  • 3. On medium-high fire, sautee minced garlic until golden brown and fragrant.
  • 4. Add ground turkey or any other meat of choice, season with 1-2 tsp of brown sugar and 1-2tbsp of soy seasoning.
  • 5. Stir fry turkey until 90{a68b2bdc65bdfb0ea1f448501e4dd2936e185e4dc8994de9274733872ab26346} cooked, then add mushrooms.
  • 6. Add rice and stir to mix with the rest of the ingredients.
  • 7. Add broth, rule of thumb 1 cup of uncooked rice to 1.5 cups of broth but you can add more along the way if it's dry.
  • 8. Add salt and pepper to season.
  • 9. Cover lid and let it boil before turning it down to low fire to simmer until rice is fully done.
  • 10. Serve with sliced green onions and salad or a side of vegetables/greens.

Snacks

For snacks, she had a few kalamata olives from the olive bar at Whole Foods (another one of her favourites), and a handful of mixed nuts.

Today’s status

Overall, we’re still seeing new regrowth every day. Even though hair is something that grows at a slow pace, we can see a difference every day, which is a really good sign.

I can only attribute the growth to nutrition + topical ginger and essential oils treatment. The additional protein and plant-food phytochemicals that she’s now getting from our daily SOYGREEN are definitely also beneficial in supporting stronger hair growth.

Project End Alopecia (Gluten-Free): Day 12

In the picture below I compare the lower crown + nape area between Day 1 and Day 12 (today) of our Project End Alopecia (Gluten-Free) journey. This area is one the largest bald patch we see in this round of hair loss episode. Although we already started to see signs of new growth sprouting out as a result of our weekly topical oils treatment as pictured on Day 1 (picture above), the progress within a short 12-day period is quite startling (Day 12 is picture below).

It’s early to tell if cutting out gluten is doing much for overall reduction in hair loss and the stronger new growth, especially that we are also adding SOYGREEN to the mix and being more diligent with topical treatment. But we’re going to take any win as a win.
