Welcome to Day 6 of our gluten-free quest to end alopecia! It’s the first day of June and summer is so close we can feel it. I’m excited for all the sun we’re going to get as vitamin D will definitely be helpful for combating alopecia!
Food wise, there isn’t much to update today as we pretty have the same thing as yesterday (Day 5). We like to keep things simple especially now that we eat at home mostly. I like to cook tasty and healthy meals but between attending to a 4 year old and working on our business at home and maintaining this blog, cooking in batches is a great time-saver sometimes. Yes, I’m talking leftovers!
How to not let cooking overtake your life and save time by cooking ‘n freezing.
One of my favourite ways of ensuring a varied and balanced meal on busy days is by cooking a casserole, one-pot style dish or sauce which includes protein and a variety of vegetables. For me, prepping and cleaning up is the most time-consuming part of cooking at home. To save myself time on busy weekdays, I just cook more of what I’d usually make for a day’s worth of meal, and save the extra as leftover. The extra effort in prepping and cleaning up is marginal to make double the volume.
In order to ensure that your leftover stays fresh for consumption in the following days, you’d want to scoop it out of the pot and into a glass container right after it finishes cooking. Be sure to use glass containers because they are safer than plastic containers especially when you’re handling hot food. With plastic containers, chemicals from the plastic migrate into your food, and even when they are labeled BPA-free, I still prefer to use glass containers only. Check out your local supermarkets as they may sometimes run deals of promos on glass containers which may end up costing the same or even less than the plastic ones. Sometimes, not always.
We always have at least a few of Pyrex containers at home, although any other brand will do.
To summarise, here are some tips for saving time by cooking and freezing in advance:
- Use glass containers for storing
- Scoop into container right after food finishes cooking
- Let food cool completely in the container before freezing
- Consume your food within a few days or up to a week
- Do not refreeze once you have thawed out your food
As usual, weekday topical treatment is organic ginger juice with a few drops of cedarwood essential oils + cypress + one drop of geranium essential oil. I write in detail about using ginger to promote hair growth in alopecia in an earlier post.
Definitely seeing signs of hair regrowth and so far no new bald patches have appeared, which is all good news.
I don’t know if it’s the camera playing trick, but the top + crown view on Day 6 is definitely looking better than it did on Day 1, mostly because of more growth on the new hair around the centre crown area.
And as always, I am slightly obsessed with the progress on the right parietal ridge and I am happy to say that the new regrowth is sprouting up day by day, moving closer and closer to covering the patch area.
It is still to early to be visible from a distance, but we’re taking it one day at a time and any sign of regrowth is a good sign.
We’re definitely continuing this gluten-free diet journey and as the days go by, we’re finding it to be actually quite doable. It takes a bit of effort but nothing too intimidating.
I must say that the daily topical ginger treatment also appears to be playing an important role, so definitely keeping up with that along with good nutrition and sleep.
